Hi all, I was a massive fan of DCSS a long time ago. Recently, I discovered the game’s development is still active, so I want to try it again. For my first run (after a while), I want to try something easy but uncommon (for me).
I remember my first all-runes run was TeSu - so it definitely was when Summons was overpowered (pre-0.13, according to the wiki). My second all-runes run was Garoyle mage (I preferred Cj in general, but it could also be FE or EE). I chose some straightforward god (like Sif Muna).
Now that I see the game has changed a lot, I want to try something new for me - something easy to play but very unusual. I prefer to stay as far away from the battle as possible, as you can see from my previous choice.
Please suggest any uncommon race-class-god combination to start with.
You can check out the guide I wrote for a Gnoll Artificer of Yredelemnul. You can be as close to or far from the fight as you want. Should be a relatively painless reentry into the game, but things have changed a lot since 0.13.
Summoning is still strong, for what it’s worth. You want to be more ‘fighting alongside them’ than way back when you could just create hordes of summons and not even need to be onscreen, but you can still have them soak a lot of damage for you. The “surprising crocodile” spell in their starting book helps a lot for passive/defensive summoner play.
If you want a really good time, play with the god Usk. I don’t know if they were in the game when you were playing, but they are the dancing god. Their piety is unique in that it resets after each fight. VS of Usk is fun. I like to wear faith when playing them to get to the good stuff fast.
Usk puts the whole screen asleep so you can get lots of stabs with daggers, they also are the most effective melee god for clearing whole LOS. There is a passive called “share pain” which distributes the damage you do over the whole screen. And their capstone ability will instant kill anything in the game AND reposition you.
