Can Trolls’ off-hand punches lop off hydra heads? I am suddenly curious about this because there’s no controlled way of disabling the off-hand punch.
I don’t think so. I have a troll who killed a hydra after about thirty attacks, and it stayed at eight heads the whole time.
Edit: Got two hydras to the 20-head cap, the hydras’ heads only ever increased by one at a time.
Sounds like you’re testing with Unarmed Combat; that’s an unreliable test, I’d say, I don’t know if that counts
Doesn’t look like it:
Coglin offhand slashing cuts heads as expected though:
In trunk you can only offhand punch when you’re unarmed, so just equipping a weapon will disable it the offhand.

Are you sure? I was wielding a battle-axe when this happened:
You hack one of the eight-headed hydra’s heads off!
The seven-headed hydra grows two more! You slash the nine-headed hydra!
The nine-headed hydra is moderately wounded.
The nine-headed hydra bites you. The nine-headed hydra bites you! x2
The nine-headed hydra closely misses you.
The nine-headed hydra bites you! x2; The nine-headed hydra bites you.
The nine-headed hydra bites you but does no damage. x2
I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. A battle axe is a 2H slashing weapon, so it’s moo for off hand porpoises.
Isn’t the off-hand punch meant to be an auxiliary attack when wielding one-handed weapons? Is that no longer the case?
It appears that way. I remember seeing a comment somewhere about it in the last couple weeks, but I’ve checked commit and change logs but can’t find it.
Testing in wiz mode confirms that I’m no longer triggering aux punches if I have a weapon in my main hand.
Found using Git blame on the user manual’s description about Unarmed Combat:
Revert of a revert of a revert, lol
I came across that when I was trying to respond earlier but it doesn’t actually mention the offhand punch nerf:
Simplify off-hand attacks
Off-hand attacks’ trigger chance scaled on UC and on XL, unlike
all other aux attacks, which scaled only on XL (if anything).
This felt inconsistent (a punch scales on UC but a kick doesn’t?),
and was confusing for players who misunderstood the UC skill
descriptions and thought off-hand punches were more than a consolation
prize for being shieldless.
Change their trigger to scale purely based on XL instead. (Damage
still scales based on UC, for now, but perhaps should also be XL
based.)
It’d be great to add a description for these somewhere - no idea
where it’d live. Ideally there’d be both a manual section and
somewhere in-game where you could learn more about your current
off-hand damage and chance.
The file I’m linking is 21Mb. It can slow down some browsers especially when trying to search.
I was doing some regex-fu on Changes.txt to try and see if it was ever explicitly called out anywhere but I still can’t remember where I saw it mentioned.
And the original double reverted commit doesn’t seem to affect it either o.O
