I’m not the best at the game, but I’m improving and I’m now able to somewhat consistently find the lair entrance before dying. the only problem is I have no clue what the best course of action is once I get to the lair entrance. I would really appreciate any advice for the current run and what do do at this part of the game in the future. also some help with skill management because it feels that’s getting me killed 90% of the time

It looks like you are doing pretty good in this game. I’d invest all my xp into that broad ax until it is down to mindelay. I think it is 18. Vamp is a good brand, but don’t rely on it healing you too much. I’ve gotten cocky with that ax and then ran into some undead and it was the end of me.

Then I would invest in my defenses pretty much exclusively for the rest of the game. I would do it by how much it costs to invest in the skill by picking the cheapest. Fighting, Armour, and shield (once you have a good shield, and then stop training it when it isn’t delaying your weapon speed anymore).

Find a kite shield or ideally a tower shield. Equip heavy armour. Gold dragon armour is what you are typically going after. Abuse oka’s powers. Finesse and heroism are incredible. If you feel like you might struggle, use them. Piety doesn’t help if you are dead.

I tend to follow Ultra Violent’s advice to clear D:12 before entering lair if there isn’t anything too scary in the main dungeon.

If you’ve found a heavier armor, I’d recommend wearing that over acid dragon scales (especially with that STR). You probably already know this, but put on your second ring.

Your skilling looks fine for a fighter. I find it’s often useful to put a few levels in evocations to help deal with more troublesome threats, but I don’t see too many wands in your possession so you’re probably good for now.

Seconding what Sobieck said about Invocations.

MiFi can pretty much tab the first few floors outside of packs the first or second time you see each flavor and some uniques. If you focus weapon skill you’ll be at mindelay by D:6ish. A few points into throw and evo will round out any immediate weaknesses.

Especially for Str builds, you should carry both an axe and a trident regardless of which you prefer. Crosstraining and Hero will get you down to mindelay and the tactical adaptations are were Oka shines imo. On that note, Oka will make status afflicting darts and boomerangs effective with minimal investment.

Outside resist heavy stuff like GDA, total D is going to be more important than minmaxing defenses, the in game info recently added makes these comparisons a breeze. Str MiFi should default to plate, anything lighter needs some bonuses to be as effective. Dex MiFi are happier around scale/chain depending on bonuses and how you skill.

I don’t go past D:10 anymore unless Lair is on D:11. The risk of being shafted to D:13+ is just too high, as there is no way for MiFi^Oka to prevent banishment. You’re pretty reliant on farming gear to be strong enough to deal with Abyss after Orc. Even when Oka gifts you crap MiFi should still be Abyss capable with regular floor trash and shops after Lair and Orc.

I spam out a lot of mindless MiFi tabbers. If you play mindfully axes are hard to beat, but if you zone out and find yourself in a lot of sticky situations like me you might find tridents a little more forgiving in the early game. One-hand polearms just got a new addition that helps alleviate the demon trident need in late game, but even better… crosstraining and Mi apts make skilling up for the inevitable broad axe for late game extremely easy.

In terms of branch progression, I recommend starting with dungeon to 12, then doing lair followed by orc, then dungeon to 15, then the S-branches (snake pit, spider nest, swamp, shoals), then vaults to 4. After that, it’s between elf and depths, and I usually do depths. After that, it’s a bit up to you. Also, try reading that stack of 8 scrolls, that’s probably identify. Also, throwing is very powerful, and Okawaru will give you free throwing weapons later on, so I recommend using it, darts can be very useful even at low skill, and curare is quite powerful.

I’d add:

  1. Read ID your scrolls. Start with the biggest stack (like that 8 and 6). ID is very common so you have a good chance of finding it. Then I keep IDing until I find Teleport. After that, I swap to IDing potions, starting with the biggest stack. After I find Cure, I ID either scrolls or potions, depending on what else I found.

  2. Invest 4 into Evoc before Lair if you find any good wand. Warp, Light and Charm are all good wands. Well, not Charm if you are following Oka… Using wands make a lot of early game stuff easy to deal with. And don’t worry about “saving charges”–you’ll find more if you live, and most wands drop off in utility as you go further or as you find more stuff.
