Export char file from online to desktop

Hello everyone,

I’ve got a good run and I want to finish it in my PC installed DCSS, is it possible to export the run from the online and have it on the desktop one?

That would be difficult. Crawl works super hard to stop people from saving games and reloading them after they were dead, so unless someone builds in a method to give you the save files while deleting them off the server, you wouldn’t have any other way of getting the save files.
Though, I believe we’re raising a point here: Devs, please make a way to download files from a game in progress, quitting the online game in the process.

DCSS saves ongoing games, and a ghost monster that is a copy of yourself from the game when you die, in the “saves” directory (in the same place alongside the “morgue” directory). I don’t remember if I checked other servers, but I did check on my server (underhound.eu, which I noticed is also the server of @Yukuai ) – the “saves” directory is protected. See for yourself:
Index of /crawl/morgue/ (WARNING: large webpage)
https://underhound.eu/crawl/thisdoesntexistthisisjustfortestingexportcharfilefromonlinetodesktoppostnum2/
https://underhound.eu/crawl/saves/

I think there’s good reason why the save games are protected. If you could download your save, you could cheat by finding out what’s in store offline and then going back to your online game with that knowledge! I guess there could hypothetically be a system where you could download a save and the game would end online but that takes work for a feature few would ever use :P

Something you could do is end your game online which will reveal your game’s seed. From there you could start a new game offline in that seed. From there, you could use wizmode (& in game, there’s a menu that shows you the various commands) to set up your character to how it was online. I think &# can load a character dump including skills, levels and stats but not inventory so you’d have to figure out the &o wizmode items spawning system.

But in underhound.eu it still reveals the seed if you Ctrl-S without dying, is that an underhound.eu thing only?

It shouldn’t do that unless the game is seeded or you’re in explore mode or something like that :o

Where do you see the seed exactly?

That’s my expectation as well, the saves directory and the game seed protected, and the seed exposed only after gameover. I just checked again and I can’t see the seed in the “in-progress” morgue file so maybe I got confused when I opened morgue files of my finished games.

Thanks for the explanation.
I understand that moving a savegame from an online to a desktop could be exploited.
