I’m new here and I’m reading a lot of topics.
I saw people that seems to be playing this for a while saying that “I saw the Orb once and was able to get it once” and that got me thinking: how far is the average?
The farthest I got was D11; L5 and O2.
I’ve been playing on and off for the past two years (though the first time I came across the game was 2010 for a hot five minutes).
Furthest I got was Zot 4. I had a good MiFi run. That was last year.
This summer I haven’t even gotten a rune yet😅 but I’m also trying to play slower now.

I use it all the time to look at much better players winning morgues to figure out how to play x combo.
It looks like in the charts section (https://dcss-stats.com/charts) that games tend to end before characters are lvl 8. Which makes sense since a winning run take a lot of time and if I’m on tilt I can kill a bunch of characters quickly.
I’ve been playing for 20 years and I’m just OK at the game. My win percentage is around 2% on my online account and I’d probably average 5% nowadays. But it took me years to get my first win. I’m guessing it is a lot easier nowadays to win because there is a lot of resources on the internet and people willing to help. Joining a clan at tournament times is a great way to meet more skilled players to help.
The way I got better was dissecting morgue files, reading forums and the like, and watching much better players play. But learning to read morgue files was probably the way I learned quickest. You get a feel for what good players value in terms of spending their XP and spells.
