How to not die with Mahkleb + seven legue boots?

On a Mahkleb character (Ds {icemail 2, sanguine armour 2, condensation shield, demonic magic 2, demonic
touch 1, Gehenna destruction, Mark of Carnage},
currently using a quickblade without shield),
I found the seven-league boots.

It’s great, but it also seems inevitable I’m going to get overconfident due to my ability to charge into most situations and cut my way out, and eventually I will charge into a situation I can’t get out of.

I could also switch into 'the +2 pair of boots "Bofemn" {Harm Rampage rElec Dex-2}'

Any advice?

I have this in my init to prevent Tab from ever moving me forward:

bindkey = [Tab] CMD_AUTOFIGHT_NOMOVE
