Non-advancing Tab

or Three .rc Lines That Could Double Your Win Rate.

When you encounter a monster, the first instinct is to press Tab and hold it down until there is only your char left. Sometimes it works, but more often it doesn’t.

You could find that a single D:2 orc is not so single when you come closer. In the best case scenario, Beogh would get a new worshipper. In the worst case, the priest and wizard would get another kill.

Instead of running into the unknown as soon as you find a monster, you could let the monsters come to you, into already explored and cleared territory. This allows you to split groups of monsters and ideally fight them one at a time.

Add these lines into your config file:

macros += M \{9} ===hit_closest_nomove
autofight_wait = true
autofight_nomove_fires = false

This assigns CMD_AUTOFIGHT_NOMOVE to the Tab key, lets Tab skip turns when there are no enemies nearby, and turns off autofire when you Tab, similar to how it works with the regular CMD_AUTOFIGHT.

It is a pretty minimal change that could save your consumables, reduce unnecessary splats, and increase your win rate. I’ve recommended it to my tournament teammates and to other players and had mostly positive feedback.

There is a trade-off: non-advancing Tab is less convenient than the regular Tab, and there will be more manual movement during fights. But it’s worth it!

Yeah I love this. I have something similar except tab is normal but shift+tab is cmd_autofight_no_move. This way I decide when to do it so it’s not inconvenient!

Not sure it will double your winrate but it’s sanity-saving sometimes haha
