This was my first run of crawl after about 20 major versions having released since I last used to play. Naturally, I wanted to try out a new species and Gnoll seemed like a good start, but by playing, I realized the species is not my cup of tea. I mostly play highly focused characters and Gnoll is the exact opposite of that.

Xom gifted me a demon trident of electrocution +2 at D:2. I am very scared of what is about to happen.

now YASD: Got lazy and died to tabbing a 7 headed hydra at L:5, but I wasn’t enjoying Gnoll anyway so I didn’t care despite the fun drops.

You could give GnIE or GnSu a try, they both can be pretty specialized with the starting books easily carrying you through Lair/Orc. Su especially has a solid progression, but in either case Ashenzari make Gn a specializing beast.
