On the Job Training

This got me thinking about what other bits there are that are really there to help learn tactics.

Anyone have more examples?

I feel like I’ve seen this concept brought up enough times I should be able to list off a bunch myself, but they’re all eluding me at the moment.

ETA: It’s cool this forum let’s me move the post on my own, it def wasn’t technical support

Hmm…

  1. Quokkas to teach you faster than you enemies?
  2. Green Orcs to teach you that AC ain’t everything?
  3. Adders for poison, ofc
  4. Big Kobolds to teach you the joys of curare?
  5. Siggy/Grinder/D1 Gnolls to teach you that OODs are a thing?
  6. Delvers to teach you the value of Fear/Map/Haste/Dig/stealth?
  7. Ice Beasts to teach you brands are bad mojo?
  8. Ice Beasts/Wights to teach you only Poison ain’t gonna cut it?
  9. Dart Slugs to teach you that sometimes things shoot back?
  10. That D1 goblin with a distort dagger to teach you the joys of following Lucy?

That’s all I can come up with on one cup of coffee…

Oh, 11. that one Igsbdjgkdhw goblin to teach you wands are nasty

Edit: also, 12. jackal packs to teach to fight mobs in a chokepoint, you idiot!
and 13. big fat ogres with bigger fatter sticks to teach you why it’s a good idea to soften things up before you melee

3 Thanks

I like that outside of delvers this is all like D:3 at the most. Even delvers is the same immediately available learning too. I hadn’t even been considering it this early in the dungeon.

I got ignition up the first time ever a long time ago. A pack of hell knights taught me about how having rF makes that spell not great.

Oh and bees teach spriggans that they are faster than most, but not all

2 Thanks

I think orc priests teach you about attacks that don’t need LoF. Orc wizards also teach how to use !curing.

Worms teach you about debuff supporters (like torpor snails), robin teaches you the dangers of o-tabbing popcorn

1 Thank

Robin teaches you that buffed packs of popcorn can be dangerous if you don’t handle them with care.

Back in the day plain worms taught you to just hit the bricks if you had low health and that you can retreat if things are going poorly.

Sigmund, of course, teaches the beginning player that life is capricious, unfair, and often very short.
