I’ve been wondering what the Orb really is and why we would want it. I’ve come to something that is probably dumb, but holds a place in my heart. I think that rather than making the Orb, Zot was an adventurer who stole it from it’s original place in Pandemonium. This is why the Lords of Pandemonium aren’t amused when you break it’s cloaking spell and try and finish what Zot started. I think the Orb might have allowed a king to rule over Pandemonium, but now all the lords are fighting. I also think that Zot was trying to bring the Orb to the surface, but it’s corrupting influence took hold of him. In a last gambit, he may have created the Realm of Zot, and sealed it with the rune gate so that only the strongest adventurers, those able to resist the Orb’s corruption, could free it.
