I got completely murked by a flying hornet of all things. I did not take the animal seriously until it was too late.
Did you try to kill that ghost? In my (so far unsuccessfull) experience with hunters their damage is rather low and if I’m unsure whether I could take on that ghost I would have just left it locked up.
I tried but I didn’t try very seriously. It’s got only 63 hp, little armour, not enough EV to be an issue, 7 damage, and only 1 level 4 spell. It has no business being a threat to me, no matter how weak hunters are 
But I judged I’d need to burn consumables, for example a scroll of silense, and I didn’t think it worth the cost
63 HP on D5 is massive. Unless you are doing melee troll levels of damage you need to be able to tank that thing for a long time to take it down. I suppose apart from the spell you can tank that thing basically forever but it does have Toxic Radiance.
It would take a bunch of potions of curing to take it depending on how often it casts (or a scroll of silence as you wrote).
