[YASD] [0.32 stable] Potion of experience in D:4(?)

Died to my own orc apostle. I don’t think I had anything to kill them with. Feels unfair. Feel free to enlighten me better if I could’ve performed better, but keep in mind that I have a tendency to tackle fights and have some overconfidence (isn’t that for everyone though?). I did try to use my wand of paralysis on the apostle five times (yes, five times! with around 55% or so (but definitely more than 50%) success chance) and they all failed for an unknown reason (the orc apostle, when examined, said “empowered by Beogh” but I have no idea if that makes them resistant to paralysis (EDIT: AFAIK, Beogh’s empowerment of orc apostle challenges doesn’t change the mechanics of combat against them, meaning that there’s no opacity/unfairness as I initially suspected there was)). As a last resort I also quaffed my potion of experience and upped Fighting (focused), Dodging (focused), and Shields (unfocused), if I’m recalling correctly. Perhaps I should’ve quaffed an unidentified potion instead (EDIT: I’m stupid, that’s exactly what I did, that’s why I have a status of attraction).

I consider Beogh a nontrivial god because it creates intentionally challenging monsters to hunt you and kill you and punishes you if you try to escape them, but this feels unfair. I feel like avoiding Beogh in the future. (EDIT: Not anymore! Beogh is not unfair as I initially suspected it to be.)

Highlights:

  • Potion of experience (see seed below) in an early Dungeon floor, I think 4 but I’m not sure.
  • I haven’t seen any altar until dying on floor 7 (not fully explored) except a faded altar on D:1 and TSO on D:7.
  • The Ecumenical Temple is on D:6 (EDIT: opened the same seed in Explore Mode — the Temple has Cheibriados, Dithmenos, Elyvilon, Fedhas, Gozag, Kikubaaqudgha, Makhleb, Nemelex, Okawaru, Qazlal, Ru, Sif Muna, Trog, Uskayaw, Vehumet, Xom, Yredelemnul, and Zin).
  • Maurice is on D:7.

All I can come up with is: switching to that +2 poison short sword. It would have been faster and (a bit) deadlier than the falchion. I might have skilled a little differently? Maybe more Invoc and hold off on throwing just yet. I don’t know if leather or steam was around, but I would have preferred something stronger than robes for a dex-fighter.

But you look like you were stuck in the open (auto-explore?) vs a faster enemy and a smiter without a good LOS break or chokepoint nearby. You had Evoc and you weren’t stingy about wand usage (condolences on that horrible luck there; maybe the Wyvern’s will was lower?). So yeah, Beogh and the RNGs had it out for you. Sorry man.

1 Thank

At first I wanted to do that, but then I felt like +2 is a bit too weak to switch my entire game to focusing on Short Blades and figured that at some point I’d find a good Long Blade weapon to replace my +0 falchion. So I put that short sword at slot ‘b’, but perhaps you’re right. Venom is an excellent brand too.

I considered switching Invocations training to focused training, but I figured that it’s less of a thing to worry about with Beogh because it’s main point is the orc allies and you can’t smite them anyway. Throwing is one of those basic skills I activated and capped at 6 to have for emergencies. It also took time until I saw any wands lol

I’m pretty sure I found steam dragon scales, not sure why it’s not in my inventory. Definitely a mistake if I didn’t take it, it has encumbrance rating 0.

Pretty sure, yeah

Are you absolutely sure it was luck?? “Empowered by Beogh” kinda sounds like it strengthens the orc enemy somehow. Also my idea was to paralyze the orc and then deal with the wyvern to take them one by one.

Thanks for replying and the suggestions!

The thing I like about the short sword is that it should have been under 1.0 attack speed. The falchion was just a hair over 1.0 since your skill was 5.7. Base of short sword is 5, with enchant you get 7. Falchion has the higher base of 8, but no brand and carries that tiny risk of giving em a double attack. So, pretty close in “plain” dmg, a bit more speed, and poison. But I’m not convinced even that sword would have saved you in that situation. It’s just a suggestion for the next run, ya know?

As for the whole “empowered” business, I have no idea how that works. Maybe it did give them some more buffs, which would have been extra uncool on Beogh’s part!

1 Thank

Honestly, that’s my problem here. The basic premise is that occassionally/rarely there would be unwinnable situations. But Beogh empowering them in an opaque way feels like an issue with Beogh, that’s the only reason why I feel like not playing with Beogh again. I knew that Beogh is nontrivial before this run because I tested the new v.0.32 Beogh in an offline Explore Mode run so I thought I knew what I was getting into. This requires an answer though to the question of what the empowerment means exactly.

So I did some quick WizMode testing. Created a guy, gave him Beogh, ran around until an apostle showed up. I checked it with xv, it had Will+

I think Will+ covers everything from 1-40. So I spawned a Wyvern (will 20), a Hornet (will 30) and an Orc Knight (will 40). I aimed a para wand at all three at 5 Evoc.

The chance of success against the Wyvern was 62%, the Hornet 52%, and the Knight 44%. The apostle showed 50%. That suggests the apostle’s will does fall within the 1-40 range and accurately shows up as Will+.

I fired the paralysis wand at the apostle. It took 4 shots to finally get him, but I did get him. I got the Hornet in 2 shots, the Wyvern in 1, and the Knight in 5. I then waited for the paralysis to wear off and zapped the apostle again. This time I got him on the first shot. I got the Hornet in 2, the Wyvern in 1, and the Knight in 1.

So my limited tiny sample size suggests that the game is showing correct info and that an “empowered” apostle isn’t immune to hexes.

(For laughs and giggles, I also tried to Yara the apostle, but the “empowered” status isn’t dispellable. Nor did it wear off after I walked around for 100+ turns. Looks like it’s baked in.)

1 Thank

A few things i would suggest:

It seems like you’re saying that the xp pot was ided before that fight? If so that’s something you want to quaff as soon as possible.
I would use the venom short sword over the falchion. It’s just a better weapon against anything that can be poisoned.
You don’t want to be wearing a robe this far into the dungeon as a character that’s not casting/being ranged. Check out some of the heavier armour you find and examine it and wear stuff with better total defenses slightly favoring ac.
You’re training a lot of skills that are unnecessary. Would not turn on throwing until you’re using boomerangs/javelins. Can turn off stealth when you put on heavier armour and even in light you don’t need to go past 3 or so. Same with evocations. You can just focus on fighting, with some armour or dodging when it’s cheap.
It’s possible that if the training that was spread across these other skills were solely on fighting/dodging, you had better defenses and had quaffed the xp pot before the fight the outcome would have been different.

2 Thanks

I actually did too before I saw your reply. First time learning to use Wizard Mode  I was able to successfully use both a wand of paralysis and a wand of charming against an orc challenge. Your testing was more methodical/thorough than mine though, I just gave myself lots of wands and tried on the apostle until it worked. I also tried to find the initial commit that reworked Beogh in Git (emphasis on initial, but I’m assuming it hadn’t changed much since the initial), and it says the empowerment only adds HP (which is communicated to the player in the UI) and a sort of might & brilliance effect — if that’s still true, then the empowerment doesn’t add anything that change the mechanics of the combat with the apostle, so I was wrong to call it “opaque”, which is good! And I’ll try Beogh again sometime.

Yes. But I figured I’d keep it to before “boss” floors like the last floors of the S branches. AFAIK the potion contains XP sufficient to level up a whole XL, so it gives more XP the later it’s quaffed.

See my previous replies. Thanks for the suggestions though!

I capped Throwing, Stealth, and Shields at 6. (Shields is trained to 6.7 and deactivated because of the potion of experience.) Throwing to 6 because of minimum delay for darts; Stealth because I figured it’s always somewhat useful to have and I could do better than just 3 or so but don’t want too much, so I decided to 6; and Shields to 6 because I only had a buckler and didn’t wanna waste XP on it when I have a great aptitude for Dodging, and ditto. Evocations I actually wanted to continue to train for the rest of the game as one of my main skills, that’s why it’s in focused mode.

You’re definitely right! But I don’t usually play like this and I have got a few characters to 1 or 2 runes of Zot already, including Merfolk characters. (As a counter-example, I’ve learned from experience that training Shapeshifting is probably not useful if I’m not intending to primarily be a talisman user, because they require so much XP.) Skill distribution is definitely something worth thinking about (also) in such later stages in the game, but I’ll leave that consideration for when I reach such later stages in practice.

Feel free to disagree with me or enlighten me with your experience or knowledge if I’m wrong. And again, thanks for the tips!

Nothing wrong with playing in the way that’s most fun for you, however if your goal is to give yourself the best chance to win a particular game a good general strategy is to make your character as strong as possible right now. Any kind of long-term planning, saving of items for later such as xp pots, enchant armour scrolls, acquirement, etc. or training skills in advance makes you more likely to die because the most difficult part of the game is the earliest when you have the fewest resources. Experience potions in particular are a gigantic boon early and lose value the longer you wait. This is likely the biggest mistake that contributed to this death.

1 Thank

But that implies they’re necessary, but they’re the rarest potion and people regularly win in DCSS. I understand your position about drinking it soon though, I know it’s a great boost, seems that we disagree on where in the game we should get great boosts. :grinning: (It’s actually an idea I got from someone else on the web, I used to quaff potions of experience immediately. Reminds me that there was a run in the previous version where I found 3 self-identifying potions of experience in a bailey lol. I think I jumped from XL 12 to 15.)

Potions of experience give less skill-ups for high level characters. They are almost completely irrelevant at XL:20+. So your choice is to drink them right away and get a sizeable boost in power at the time you need it the most, or save them and get a small boost at the time you really don’t need one.

3 Thanks
