Howdy! I’m sorry you are having issues with poison enemies. They are dangerous if you don’t have the right tools to deal with them.

You had a few potions that would have saved your run in your inventory. If you have a fatal amount of poison in your system blindly quaff unknown potions because it literally can’t get worse than a fatal dose of poison. You had a good chance of getting Heal Wounds or Curing which would have helped, or even lignification would have helped. When blindly quaffing, pick the potions you have the most of since Curing is very very common. So you are most likely to have a lot of them.

Next, if you are in a bad position to fight bees (not in a corridor with a weak character). You can use scrolls to help you out. Fear will make them run from you. Summoning will give you a meat shield. Teleportation will TP you out.

You were worshiping Sif so this is less of a problem, but I never memorize spell that I can’t use. You had ignition memorized, which would have trivialized those enemies (it is amazing against gangs), but your cast chance was 0%. Those spell points could have been used to learn something more useful. Irradiate should have been your next goal IMO. Irradiate is literally the only spell I want on 100% of casters. My main goal is to not get within melee range when I’m playing a caster. If I fail, Irradiate will get me out of most situations because it is so powerful (you get a chance of mutation (bad) if you cast more than 3 times).

Sobieck’s given you some great tips. I’ve got a few more for you to consider:

  1. You had 5 ID scrolls and 5 unknown pots. This should never happen. ID until you run out of IDs. And in this specific case, 4 of the 5 could have saved you vs that mob: Cure, Heal, Inviso, and Tree.

  2. Fighting in the open is never a good idea. If you take stairs down and see nothing but open areas, be really careful. Do NOT autoexplore. It will invariably put you in the worst possible spot. Use Shift-Arrow to move towards the nearest wall. It will stop you the moment anything shows up. Hopefully you didn’t wake it up. Move away from it, whatever it is, and keep trying to find a wall to hug. Your goal is to find a corridor/chokepoint/LOS break to hide behind. If you are spotted by a swarm coming from all sides, Teleport immediately. Do not try to fight it out and see what happens. Teleporting is safest if you do it with full HP and MP because you have no idea where you’ll land and if it is a sketch spot, you’ll need to Tel again or fight. Tel at low health is a common move I see. And 90% it leads to death. Tel early. Seriously, Tel early.

  3. On a new, bad level, read that Revelation. It’ll help you find a safe spot. Don’t try to save it for a vault or whatever. Use it so you live and can find more Revelations.

  4. Sobieck pointed out Fear and Summoning. If you used either as soon as that mob started closing, you’ll thin them down considerably giving you more time to act. Again, don’t save em.

  5. Three Haste pots. One should have been used as soon as the mob starts coming. It won’t let you outrun the bees & hornet, you it will give you more actions to respond (with say, Fear, Summons, Spells, Wands). Yes, Haste is precious. Yes, Haste is needed for emergencies. This was an emergency.

  6. Brilliance and Flame Wave. That could have cooked all those darn bugs. Tree + Brilliance + Wave should have outright won that fight.

  7. You had Nets and Paralysis. You were in the open, so this wouldn’t have worked, but if you were in a corridor or chokpoint, you can move to let one in and freeze it in place. The stuck one would have blocked all the others while you legged it outta there.

  8. Poly. This thing can be a one-shot kill. Again, it wouldn’t have saved you here since you were mobbed. But in a 1-on-1 situation, see what it’ll do to a Bee or Orc Wiz/Priest/unique. If it can turn em into something w/o poison or magic, that can totally change the fight. But don’t use it if it might turn the target into anything red, obviously!

  9. Almost overlooked this. Resist. Resist pots give rP. There were 2 of those in inventory.

  10. One thing that might help your survival is to treat Crawl like Chess rather than Space Invaders. That is, Crawl is turn based, not real time. So if you see a bad situation, stop playing immediately. Turn the game off and look at your morgue. See what spells, pots, scrolls, wands, god magic, abilities (e.g. dragon breath) are available. Then look again. Then look one more time. Read up on anything you are not experienced with. Come up with a plan. Then resume playing. Those Bees would have gladly sat there waiting while you asked around and mulled things over. Aren’t they sweet? Abuse that.

Anyway, you’re doing great. Keep it up and don’t forget to have fun. Good luck and hopefully see you back here with a YAVP soon!

Glad to help!

One last thing, that +9 Triple Sword? Don’t miss it too much. It was bad for your Drac as anything more than some free Will and rN.

Your Drac was already a solid caster. It would have been more cost effective to keep devoting xp to casting/schools. You had two end-game spells: Ignition and Haunt. Either could win a 3 rune game. You were already working on Fire and Summons, so you were already several steps towards either.

A triple sword requires a ridiculous amount of xp to get going. At least 16 to get even 1.0 delay(!). And all that sword training doesn’t overlap with magic. Fire and Summons do.

If you really needed a backup melee, save it for Staves–and only after you find a good enhancer staff. 4 lvls would have gotten it to 1.0 attack–5 or 6 with a shield. So, cheap and good enough for a character that really doesn’t want to melee anyway. Those sticks deal their dmg based on Evoc and School. You already got Schools. And you’d want Evoc anyway. So using an enhancer staff is a cost effective and enough for your needs.

tldr; no need to miss that sword.
