Step one: be in an icecave, running away from a death yak simulacrum
Step two: misclick. Take a free hit.
Step three: check the speed, Death yak is slower than me.
Step four: run away towards the exit
Step five:

The death yak simulacrum attacks as it pursues you!
The death yak simulacrum gores you.
You die…

I guess it’s the players responsibility to know the rules of the game.

To be fair, I also had a slightly suboptimal build, (some investment in Invo, but not enough for it to be powerful I think,) and I was running away at low health because I’d fought with poor tactics a little while.

Yea, movement and AoO are weird. I am pretty sure AoO is checked before movement happens, but someone more versed in the mechanics can correct me. And a “slow” enemy is very likely to still stay next to you for a few moves–that is, it takes time for them to miss a step due to their “slowness.”

You probably already saw this, but butterflies and blink was in your inventory. If you were a gambler, warp, paralyze, net, inviso, dispersal might have worked.

Bummer on the death, man.

I’m surprised that your Armour skill was higher than Fighting…

it usually isn’t, but I had an Armour manual.

Yes, you should take the responsibility for learning and staying on top of the changing game mechanics if you’re going to play trunk.

Since it looks like you’re a sporadic player, maybe playing latest stable versions is going to be less surprising for you. Devs release verbose change notes for major versions, and the wiki gets updated to more accurately reflect stable.

There’s also a hints mode that you could have taken advantage of to learn what has changed in the game which clearly lays out AoO in it’s simplicity:

When you move away from an enemy, they have a small (1/3) chance of taking
advantage and launching a free attack.

That’s literally all you need to know about AoO, and it was provided in the hints mode. Maybe devs should add that quote to the startup splash screen art?
